Dear Urbanhounders,

The Brits have the good sense to honor their hero dogs with a set of stamps. US hounds get no such official accolades, so we'd like to send some Valentine's Day love to brave canines and the people who support them.

First off, there are the hounds working beside our troops. Beyond their official role, military working dogs provide emotional support. Even regular dogs have helped soldiers and their families cope with the stresses of combat.

Then there are the hounds who give comfort to those who are suffering, purpose to people's lives, and support to those who need it.

And dogs are putting their abilities to work in new ways all the time, like using their sense of smell to help protect wildlife. One day, hounds could even serve as cancer detectors.

Finally, we'd like to tip our hats to the "Vicktory Dogs," the hounds rescued from Michael Vick's dog fighting operation. They survived, with their capacity to love intact. Now that's heroism.

With Valentine's hugs and kisses to you and your hounds,

Laura Cavaluzzo,
Editor, urbanhound San Francisco

Hound News

Vick's Dogs Up for Adoption. Last month we reported that 22 of the dogs rescued from Michael Vick's dog-fighting operation were being sent to Best Friends Animal Society in Utah, while 25 additional dogs were on their way to other shelters and rescue organizations nationwide. BadRap, a Bay Area rescue organization that specializes in pit bulls, helped to evaluate the dogs, discovering that only one of the 49 was too aggressive to handle. Now Bad Rap has brought five of them to the Bay Area to find new, loving homes. You can read all about the evaluations and watch slide shows of the dogs -- as they were when they were rescued and as they are today -- on Bad Rap's website.

Indictments in the Tainted Pet Food Case. The Associated Press reports that three companies – two in China and one in the U.S. – have been indicted in connection with the melamine-tainted wheat gluten used in the manufacture of pet food that killed thousands of dogs and cats last year. The indictments allege that Xuzhou Anying Biologic Technology Development Co. knowingly introduced melamine to the gluten to artificially boost its protein content. Suzhou Textiles is alleged to have mislabled the product and failed declare it as a food ingredient, in order to avoid government inspection in China. ChemNutra, the US-based company, is alleged to have knowingly distributed mislabeled product; the indictment does not allege that ChemNutra knew the product was tainted.

New Strain of Parvo Found in the U.S. Researchers at Oklahoma State University have identified a strain of canine parvovirus previously unknown in the United States. The researchers, who published their findings in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, hope the discovery of CPV-2c will lead to more effective vaccines, according to Dr. Sanjay Kapil, who led the study.

Got Puppy Love? The ASPCA is looking to celebrate both Valentine's Day and the bond between human and animal by holding a "My Furry Valentine" contest. Entrants are encouraged to submit photos of the pet that introduced them to loving an animal, whether it be a childhood pet, a current family dog or any other animal that touched their lives. The top 10 entrants will receive an ASPCA prize pack that includes a t-shirt, stuffed animal, ASPCA awareness bracelets and a copy of "The Emotional Lives of Animals" by Marc Bekoff. Entry deadline is February 29.

What's On. Animal Planet has a new show, Petfinder, in which hosts Jarod Miller and Dina Zaphiris help match families with shelter animals (including some dogs). The show, which premiered on February 9, is created in conjunction with the popular Web site Petfinder.com. The network also continues to air the finals of the AKC/Eukanuba National Championships, where 3,000 dogs compete to become Best-in-Show. The network is also airing the AKC Agility Championships. Meanwhile, the National Geographic Channel will air "Search for the First Dog," in which canine experts look for relics of the first domesticated dogs. The show, which aired on Wednesday, February 13, will be re-aired Thursday, February 21.
