Dear urbanhounders,
With Memorial Day coming up, we're daydreaming about getaways--dog-friendly getaways, of course. What are the best places to go? And how do you get there?
If you're looking to escape the city for a hike or a swim and still be home for dinner, head straight for Fort Funston, Point Isabel or the Marin Headlands. For a weekend getaway, it's hard to beat Carmel, the storybook village by the sea that allows dogs just about everywhere. Then there's Napa and Sonoma, where more and more wineries are opening their grounds, and their tasting rooms, to hounds.
Further out, in Anderson Valley, is The Other Place, a 500-acre ranch with achingly beautiful views and secluded cottages that welcome dogs (and their humans). The Russian River is the spot for canoeing and kayaking with your dog. And in Mendocino, you'll find the Stanford Inn, where visiting dogs are given free Frisbees (to toss on the nearby beach) and biscuits on their pillows.
Need a complete change of scenery? Then you'll probably need to board an airplane. We've got advice on that, too.
And please, if you've got travel tips for us, feel free to share them.
Happy travels,
Laura Cavaluzzo,
Editor, urbanhound San Francisco

We're #1! The Humane Society has released its survey of the most humane cities in the United States, and San Francisco tops the list. In fact, the results indicate that the City of St. Francis is almost twice as humane as the average city surveyed. We can be proud that only 9% of our pet stores sell puppies (versus the 34% average in other cities), and that we have only 10 fur retailers (while the average was 29), but there's still room for improvement. The Humane Society says our local media could do a better job of covering animal issues and that San Francisco could use more good samaritans to come to the aid of orphaned and injured wildlife.
Seasonal restrictions have been lifted at Crissy Field. Per an announcement made on May 1 by GGNRA General Superintendent Brian O'Neill, dogs may once again romp off-leash in the Crissy Field Wildlife Protection Area, because the snowy plovers have moved to their breeding grounds. Says O'Neill, the restrictions will be resumed when the plovers return to Crissy in July. For more information, call 415-561-4728.
Every day now, it seems, we hear of yet another lawsuit filed against pet-food manufacturers. But as we've long noted on urbanhound's Hound Law pages, when it comes to dogs or cats, it can be near impossible to sue for pain or suffering. Ditto for punitive damages. Now the Wall Street Journal reports a glimmer of hope: there is growing legal recognition that, yes, pets may indeed be worth something more than what we actually pay for them. Finally!
Cable TV goes to the dogs. Animal Planet is airing three hound-related shows this month. Mondays at 8, the Monks of New Skete tackle behavior problems on Divine Canine. At 8:30, there's It's Me or the Dog, with trainer Victora Sitwell. The Crufts Dog Show (the UK's answer to Westminster) airs on Sunday, May 27 at 8 PM.
