Dear urbanhounders,

What is it about spring that has us daydreaming of getting a(nother) dog? Has the return of sunny weather--even if intermittent--gone to our heads? Forget the soggy, sloggy leash walks and muddy paws of winter; on a sunny Saturday sipping coffee at a sidewalk table or strolling the beach at Fort Funston, a(nother) dog seems like a capital idea.

Whatever it is, if you too are dreaming about dogs, urbanhound's famous Breed Finder can help nail down the right hound for your home, whether you want a pure-bred or a mixed-breed.

Puppy or adult dog (or sweet, mellow senior)? Male or female? For advice from other urbanhounders, visit our Hound Talk discussion boards. In the Getting a Dog category you'll find a wealth of information and opinions on where, when and how to search for your new hound. A recent thread in the Breeds category talks about the best dogs for folks with allergies. And over in the Behavior & Training category, you'll find helpful advice on housebreaking and other vital topics.

Ready to take the plunge? Check out Adopt a Hound, our ever-growing guide to local shelters and rescue groups. And be sure to consult the listings below for adoption events near you.

Happy hound hunting, and happy spring, too,

Laura Cavaluzzo,
Editor, urbanhound San Francisco

Mandatory spay and neuter in California? California legislators are considering a law that would make spaying or neutering your hound mandatory at 4 months of age (with a few exceptions, including professional breeders). CA AB 1634 is aimed at reducing pet over-population, but some dog guardians, and even some No-Kill advocates, see it as draconian, favoring public education and low-cost spay and neuter programs over legislation. A website has been launched in support of the bill. For the case against such legislation, visit the online resource library of the No Kill Advocacy Center and read Nathan Winograd's comments in "Building a No Kill Community" (pg. 17).

A Great Dane and a Basset Hound walk into a bar... As California contemplates solutions to overpopulation, Washington State is considering a bill to allow dogs in bars. Senate Bill 5485 seeks to give liquor license holders he leeway to allow well-behaved, leashed dogs to belly up to the bar along with their owners (also, well-behaved, one assumes). No telling how hounds meeting up at happy hour may affect the afore-mentioned pet population-control issue.

Dramamine for dogs? The Food and Drug Administration has approved Pfizer's Cerenia prescription medication, which is meant to curb acute vomiting in dogs, including vomiting caused by car sickness. According to Pfizer's animal health division, vomiting is one of the most common maladies veterinarians see, with nearly 2.8 million acute cases a year and another 1.2 million caused by motion sickness. The once-daily prescription medication is expected to be available by this summer.
