Dear urbanhounders,

We cover a lot of ground at urbanhound. We review weekend getaways, pet shops, and dog parks. We offer training and legal tips. We've got a Breed Finder and a canine's guide to airline travel.

Still, what we're most proud of is our Hound Health section. It offers advice on alternative treatments, pet insurance plans, and low-cost veterinary care.

Above all, what makes Hound Health the resource on veterinary health is our rich (and ever-growing) library of essential Q&As: What can I do about my dog's terrible breath? Do old dogs get senile? Is heartworm treatment harmful? My dog has leukemia: what's the prognosis? Do dogs need flea prevention in the winter? Do glucosamine/chondroitin sulfite supplements help dogs with hip dysplasia?

Answering all these questions (and far more) is our own Betsy Brevitz, D.V.M., a graduate of Tufts' School of Veterinary Medicine and author of the critically acclaimed Hound Health Handbook: The Definitive Guide to Keeping Your Dog Happy, Healthy & Active.

On that note: Here's to healthy dogs (and to a very happy 2007!).

Yours,
Laura Cavaluzzo
Editor, urbanhound San Francisco

Hound News

Pill for Chubby Pups Many would lie, cheat, or steal to get a pill that would make them lose 20 percent of their body weight. Well, pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has answered the call, but for dogs, not people. Their new drug, Slentrol (we're not making this up), reduces appetite and absorption of fat. In clinical trials, dogs lost about three percent of their weight a month, ultimately losing 18 to 22 percent without changing their diets. The FDA says possible side effects include "abdominal distention, abdominal pain, diarrhea, flatulence, headache, nausea and vomiting." Unfortunately, the drug causes liver damage in humans.

New tethering law in effect. As of January 1, California's dog owners are prohibited from tethering or chaining their hounds to any stationary object for more than three hours in any 24-hour period. There are a few exceptions, and the law does permit tethering to a running line, as long as no pinch, prong or choke collars are used. Penalties can range from a warning for first-time offenders to a $1000 fine per dog and up to 6 months in jail.

New Year's Resolutions for Pet Owners. It's that time of year again. Even if you elect not to make any resolutions for yourself, the San Francisco SPCA encourages you to make some for the health of your hound. Their To Do list includes updating vaccinations, having your pet microchipped, taking a pet first aid class and more. We think it's a terrific blueprint for a healthy, happy 2007.
