Dear urbanhounders,

With apologies to Mark Twain, the most idyllic summer you'll ever spend is early autumn in San Francisco. As breezes slake the sizzle of the inland valleys, the fog draws back from the coast and San Francisco basks in sun. That means perfect dog-walking weather just about everywhere. Even better, this month ushers in the season for fabulous canine events.

All over the Bay Area, beginning now, dogs are celebrated with parties, parades, fundraisers, gatherings, blessings, and more. Our listings below include: a charity dog wash, a canine film festival, a dog-friendly 5K charity run, and an all-out celebration of pet pride.

While October starts with blessings, it ends with tricks and treats (two topics on which all dogs are experts), so now's the time to start dreaming up costumes---one for you and, of course, one for your hound.

See you out and about,
Laura Cavaluzzo

The author of Fragments of Grace: My Search for Meaning in the Strife of South Asia, Constable has a unique and compelling perspective to share on the challenges of fostering animal care in a country where desperate poverty makes meeting even human needs a near-impossibility and many consider dogs to be unclean. Non-members welcome. $10 donation suggested.

Hound News

Tasteful art for a good cause. Pawlick's mosaics are modern in sensibility and subtle in shading... and made entirely out of dog kibble. Proceeds benefit shelters across the US.

Wash those hands! The Centers for Disease Control recently issued a report recommending that pet owners wash their hands thoroughly after giving their pets animal-derived treats, after nine people contracted salmonella infection from contact with processed, packaged treats containing raw beef or salmon in 2004 and 2005. The report recommends that children under 5 years old, older adults, and those with compromised immune systems avoid handling such treats at all.

New state-wide animal-welfare bills in the pipeline. Three new pieces of animal welfare legislation have passed the state Senate and Assembly and are awaiting Governor Schwartzenegger's signature. SB 1806 would make it would make it a crime to leave a companion animal in a closed vehicle in conditions that may endanger the animal. AB 450 would incorporate the California Animal Response Emergency System into the standardized emergency management system to ensure that animals are not overlooked during crisises. And AB 2862 would require the Department of Consumer Affairs to work with pet stores and breeders to establish regulations governing the care and handling of companion animals. The ASPCA is encouraging animal lovers to urge the Governor to sign all three bills.

NAP Plan Passes. On August 22, the San Francisco Recreation & Parks Commission unanimously approved the Natural Areas Program management plan, despite passionate opposition by several groups, including dog owners, who fear the plan will destroy some 20,000 trees and eliminate 80% of the legal off-leash space in The City. The plan will now enter an 18-month environmental review phase.
