Water, water everywhere, and nowhere to get your paws wet. What with increasingly rigorous leash-law enforcement, dangerous currents, and contaminated water, it's becoming more of a hassle to find a spot where your dog can go swimming.

Carmel City Beach
Crissy Field
Dillon Beach Resort
Esplanade Beach

Garland Ranch Regional Park
Ocean Beach
Pet Camp's Dog Pool
Point Isabel Regional Shoreline Park

Don't despair, though, this is still a good town for water dogs. After all, Jake the golden retriever came in 72nd out of more than 500 (otherwise human) swimmers in 2005's Alcatraz Invitational.

Follow these basic rules to help keep off-leash privileges at area beaches: always carry a leash, always have your dog under good voice control, don't let your dog into areas set aside for birds or other wildlife, don't let your dog harass other beachgoers, don't allow your dog to dig or otherwise destroy park property, and always, always, always pick up!
