stanford inn by the sea, mendocino
This pretty inn, surrounded by 11 acres of gardens and a golden meadow overlooking Mendocino Bay to the west and the Big River to the east, is so pet friendly that 60 to 70 percent of guests arrive with at least one animal companion in tow. There's plenty to do, and most of it can be done with your hound.
Approximately 156 miles. A three- to three-and-a-half hour drive.
Take US 101 north to the last exit, Route 128/Cloverdale (about 86 miles). Follow Route128 north for about 55.5 miles. Route 128 becomes Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) at the mouth of the Navarro River. Continue on Highway 1 for about 10 miles until you see Mendocino Village. Look for Comptche-Ukiah Road and turn right. The main driveway to the Stanford Inn is the second left.
Your dog will be spoiled by the goodies here: his own water bowl and Frisbee, a dog bed, and a fancy dog biscuit wrapped in ribbons. Better yet, there's almost no activity your dog can't join in on, from the Inn's complimentary breakfast to a canoe or kayak ride down the Big River or a swim at the beach.
A luxurious getaway. Amenities include a heated Olympic-size pool in a greenhouse filled with tropical plants, and a full-service spa offering massage, bodywork treatments, facials, and aromatherapy wraps. Yoga lessons and a sauna and hot tub are also available. The on-site restaurant, The Ravens, is vegetarian. Just a 10-minute walk away across the Big River Bridge sits the lovely coastal village of Mendocino. The surrounding Mendocino Coast area offers a wealth of outdoor activities.
The 33 pine- and redwood-paneled rooms are decorated country style. Each room has a big feather bed, a fireplace, a private deck and wireless internet access. The Inn also rents one- or two-bedroom cabins with a living area and kitchen.
Dog food and warm clothes. Evenings can get cold.
Dogs are allowed anywhere on the property except the swimming pool area. They must be leashed and well behaved. Dogs can't be left in the room unattended. Dogs are invited to breakfast and happy hour but not into the restaurant.
Room rates start around $270 and are discounted by as much as 25% in the off-season, from the end of October to the end of March.
