samuel p. taylor state park, lagunitas
Campsites and picnic spots nestled among the redwoods, a paved trail for walks.
The park is about 24 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The trip will take 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.
Take US 101 north, get off at the Sir Francis Drake Blvd. exit and take the ramp toward San Anselmo. Drive about 15 miles west on Sir Francis Drake, passing the communities of Greenbrae, Kentfield, Ross, San Anselmo, Fairfax, and Woodacre. You'll see the park entrance on the left at 8889 Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
The sounds and smells of the forest, a chance to come along on a family picnic or camping trip.
A peaceful place to picnic, walk, or camp. This 2,882-acre park in central Marin County is in a spectacular setting with gigantic redwoods, lush ground cover, and open grasslands. In November and December, it's possible to watch the annual spawning run of silver salmon in Papermill Creek.
You can take your dog for an easy walk on the old Northwest Pacific Railroad grade, a paved, flat, shady three-mile path (bikers and Rollerbladers love this trail, though, so be cautious). This is a segment of the longer Cross Marin Trail, so you can continue your saunter beyond the borders of the park. Both picnic areas and camping facilities here are well appointed with bathrooms, showers, stoves, and tables.
Food for a picnic or camping provisions.
Dogs must be kept on leashes at all times in the picnic areas, campgrounds, and parking lots. Dogs are not allowed on non-paved trails.
The single day-use fee is $6. Camping costs $25 a night between May 15 and September 15, and $20 a night the rest of the year. There's a $7.50 reservation fee.
