redwood regional park, oakland
Because this is an original redwood grove just a few miles from downtown Oakland where you can take advantage of the East Bay Regional Park District's liberal leash policy.
45 minutes or so, depending on traffic.
Take the Bay Bridge to I-580 and exit at 35th Ave. Head east on 35th Ave., which becomes Redwood Rd. This road will lead you to the park. For a guide to the different entrances, see the Park District's website.
Hiking in the shade on soft trails. A creek to cool off in.
38 miles of trails in a peaceful, shady redwood forest. Secluded picnic areas. Views all around, west to downtown San Francisco and the Bay, east to Mt. Diabolo.
Bathrooms, water, and maps are available.
Water, sunscreen, snacks, and poop bags.
Dogs may be off leash and under voice control in undeveloped areas of the park. You'll have to clip on the leash when you're in picnic areas and parking lots or near to the road. There's plenty of wildlife in this park, so be sure your dog doesn't chase or otherwise harass birds and small animals.
Parking costs $5, and there's a $2 fee for each dog.
