point isabel regional shoreline, richmond
The East Bay Regional Park District claims that this is "the largest off-leash dog park in the nation." That may be true, but the appeal of Point Isabel goes way beyond size alone. Here there are wide-open fields, a rocky ocean beach, and some of the heppest hounds in the Bay Area.
It's about a 30-minute drive without traffic.
Take I-80 or I-580 to Richmond and exit at Central Ave. Head west to Point Isabel and park in the lots on Isabel St. or Rydin Rd.
Acres and acres of meadow for running, fetching, and playing with other dogs. Plus a beach and a channel for safe swimming.
Sweeping fog-shrouded views of the San Francisco skyline, Golden Gate Bridge, and Marin Headlands. Generous space to stroll and enjoy bay breezes. The park has many bathrooms, a water fountain, benches, picnic tables, and an ample supply of free biodegradable poop bags. Next to the Rydin Rd. parking lot is a hose for cleaning off your dog before the ride home.
Mud Puppies Tub & Scrub and Sit and Stay Café are two terrific park concessions. Mud Puppies, open from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day, offers a self-service dog wash for $11 and a full-service wash for $16 to $31, depending on the dog's size. The Café, open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., serves lunch, coffee, and pastries.
A leash, a towel, a water bowl or bottle, and toys.
Although dogs may run free, you've got to carry a leash and keep dogs under voice control at all times. Don't let your dog dig or otherwise damage the park. Always pick up the poop.
