The east side of this lovely 13-acre park is bustling with tourists photographing the famous Painted Ladies, but the west side is one of San Francisco's largest official dog play areas with pathways, open grassy areas, and peaceful shaded spots. As one user of the park advised us: "The gardener is dog-friendly, so please be respectful of the planted areas by keeping your dogs out of them." The only downsides here? Very limited parking and no restrooms.
On the third Saturday of every month D5DOG holds a park clean-up with free coffee and donuts, and every August they hold the Great Dogs in the Park Festival, a fair with Canine Good Citizen testing, shopping, and information on local dog services and groups.

The official off-leash area at this park is on the terraces. But since playing with a dog on narrow terraces is not particularly pleasant, you'll catch many of the neighborhood dogs running off-leash on the north side of the park—officially a leash-required area—instead. There's lots of flat ground here and an active dog people social scene to boot. The park is presently undergoing improvements by the Friends of Alta Plaza Park who are planning to install poop-bag dispensers and a doggie water fountain shortly.
Note to Pug owners: the first Sunday of every month is Pug Day. At around 2 p.m., depending on the weather, you can find as many as 200 Pugs and Pug people mingling in the park. Check out the Pug Sunday website for more information.

As in several of the city's parks, the off-leash area is less than optimal—it's small and adjacent to a steep slope that leads down to heavily-trafficked Sacramento Street. So many expand their horizons to the rest of this hilly, green and tree-filled park. You'll want to have your dog under good voice control, as this park is used by many kinds of people, including the homeless and the morning tai-chi crowd. We hear that this park has a good gay dog person scene. If you'd like to get involved in caring for this park, contact the Friends of Lafayette Park by emailing Kim Barnes.
