marin headlands
Directly on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, this beautiful, easily accessible chunk of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area has a leash-free beach and hiking trails where dogs are welcome.
About a 20- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic and where you start out.
Take US 101 north across the Golden Gate Bridge. Get off at the Alexander Ave. exit, the second exit on the other side of the bridge. Turn left at the end of the exit ramp, pass under US 101, stay to the right and get onto Conzelman Road. Follow the road until it becomes one way. At the stop sign turn right onto Field Road, which will take you to the Visitor Center. There's ample parking in the park.
First and foremost, Rodeo Beach, a long, wide, dramatic stretch of beach where dogs can play off leash. Those that can tolerate icy water are welcome to swim. Leashed dogs are allowed on the Miwok, Wolf Ridge, Coastal, and Pirates Cove hiking trails. Ask at the Visitor Center for the trail map, which clearly marks where dogs may go.
Rodeo Beach is unusual because rather than sand it has colorful polished stones. The Marin Headlands trails are long and steep enough to give you and your dog a good workout, but they are generally cool, foggy, and windy, so neither of you will get overheated. Most trails offer wonderful views.
The Visitor Center, open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., offers water for hounds and drinks and snacks for people. On cold days, a fire may be roaring in the fireplace.
Water for your dog, a towel, and a picnic lunch. Plus a warm jacket as this area is prone to high winds and fog, and the weather can change quickly.
Keep your hound under voice control on the beach. On trails, dogs must be on a leash to keep them from coming in contact with potentially dangerous wildlife, including coyotes and mountain lions. And, as always, you must pick up after your dog.
