There are four official off-leash areas in Golden Gate Park:
- Northwest—at 38th Ave. and Fulton St. Parking lot adjacent to the dog play area.
- Northeast—off of Stanyan St. between Fulton and Hayes Sts. Street parking only.
- Southwest—bounded by MLK Jr Dr. and Middle Dr. between 34th and 38th Aves. Street parking only.
- Southeast—bounded by Lincoln Way and MLK Jr. Dr. between 7th and 5th Aves. Street parking only.
The area above the Big Rec ball fields has long been an informal dog play area. Enter the park at Lincoln Way and 9th Ave. Street parking only.

Northwest
Named the Golden Gate Park dog training area, this is the largest fenced-in official off-leash play area in the city and is a good spot to let dogs who don't have good recall run free. It's heavily used, dusty in dry weather and very muddy in wet weather. Your dog may initially be taken aback by the bison grazing nearby.
Northeast
A narrow field that has been co-opted by homeless people. it's not clean and if your dog eats garbage (and what dog doesn't?) you'll spend the whole time chasing after her and prying things out of her mouth. Not a great spot.
Southwest
A small off-leash area that's not well marked and that has no fences, despite its proximity to heavily-trafficked roadways. In the late spring, watch out for foxtails.
Southeast
Like its neighboring dog play area to the west, this dog play area has traffic, homeless encampments, and foxtails to avoid. It would probably be more fun to just clip on the leash and stroll through the many lovelier areas of the park.
The area behind the athletic fields has become a de facto off-leash area because its safer and nicer than the nearby dog play area in the southeast of the park. Hoping to secure the area's off-leash status, the Big Rec Dog Association holds clean-ups on Sundays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
