Drive south on Skyline Blvd. (Highway 35). Pass Lake Merced and the traffic light at John Muir Dr., and go up the hill. Look for a small sign on the right before John Daly Blvd. There's a parking lot at the end of the road off of Skyline Blvd. and additional street parking along Skyline Blvd at John Muir Dr.

The San Francisco Dog Owners Group calls Fort Funston "the best off-leash area in California, if not the USA" and we're not prepared to argue. On the beach and along the bluffs, dogs of all shapes and sizes are having the time of their lives. There's only one small area where dogs must be on leashes—south of Stairwell 21 to Sloat Boulevard—in order to protect the endangered Western Snowy Plover. As with all of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, off-leash policies are in flux. To get involved and stay informed, join Fort Funston Dogwalkers. This group organizes clean-up days on the first Saturday of each month starting at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot. Call them at 415-468-1262 to confirm meeting times.
