Carmel is about a two and a half hour drive south of San Francisco. You can take the coastal route to Santa Cruz and then continue on CA-1, or go via inland freeways. To avoid the crowded parking lot once you reach the beach, take a left and drive south along Scenic Road. Parking is free along the road and permitted during the day. Off the dirt pathway next to the road are stairs that descend to the beach.
