It's a charming village that makes a point of welcoming dogs. Leashes are optional on the town's stunning white sand beach.
Roughly 120 miles from San Francisco, it's about a two-hour drive without traffic.
For the more scenic route to Carmel, take US-280 South for about 37 miles to CA-85 South toward Gilroy. After about 8 miles, take CA-17 South towards Santa Cruz. You will travel on this two-lane highway walled by tall pine and redwood trees for about 22 miles to Highway 1 South toward Watsonville/Monterey. Highway 1 winds along the rocky Pacific coast past artichoke fields, sand dunes and quaint seaside towns. Although the town of Moss Landing has banned dogs from its beaches, Pacific Grove is a charming place where your travel buddy can unleash as you soak in the sea air and picturesque views. After about 44 miles on Highway 1 you'll reach Carmel. To go straight to the beach, turn right onto Ocean Ave. To avoid the crowded parking lot, take a left and drive south along Scenic Road. Parking is free along the road and permitted during the day. Off the dirt pathway next to the road are stairs that descend to the beach.
Many inns and restaurants open their doors to dogs. Some offer special services—pet sitting, a gift basket with goodies for you hound, or a dog menu. We suggest the Sunset House or the Lamp Lighter Inn. Particularly pet-friendly restaurants include Forge in the Forest and Le Coq d'Or. Undoubtedly, though, the hound highlight of Carmel is the mile-long stretch of leash-free beach. The water is clean, clear, and cold, and at times gets rough surf.
Carmel's fairy tale cottages are nestled among enormous Monterey Pines and Cypresses and gardens bursting with color. The town center offers art galleries, boutiques, coffee shops, and restaurants. The grounds of the Carmel Mission, the second-oldest Spanish-style basilica in California, can be visited with a dog. Across the street is the 35-acre Mission Trail Nature Preserve. Hounds are welcome on its well-shaded trails. The Carmel Art Festival, held every year in May, includes a silent auction of dog-themed art to benefit local charities.
Doggie bags are provided in depots on the pathway above the beach next to the trashcans. Running water and dog bowls can also be found on the stairways to the beach. Your B and B may provide dog beds, balls, towels, and treats.
Bring warm clothes as the weather by the ocean can be cool and foggy. However, you might be lucky enough to catch a sunny weekend, so we suggest bringing a swimsuit as well. You'll need a towel, beach toys, and snacks for your dog.
Dogs must be on a leash in the central business district, but can go leash-free on the beach and in residential areas. Wherever you are, you must always pick up after your dog.
Access to the beach and parking along Scenic Road are free. Otherwise, however, this town is expensive. If cost is a concern, visit in the off-season (Nov.-Jan.).
