Compared to some cities, it's a breeze getting around San Francisco with a dog. Still, there are plenty of rules and restrictions regarding dogs and public transportation, so before you hop on the next train or bus, read on.

If all else fails, call a pet taxi (for taxi listings, go to urbanhound's services directory). Note: none of the restrictions below apply to service dogs, who, by law, are allowed just about everywhere.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Contact: 510-465-2278 www.bart.gov
Dogs are allowed on BART at all times, free of charge, but they must be in a kennel or carrier.
Muni Metro, buses, and historic streetcars Contact: 415-673-6864 www.sfMuni.com/cms/mms/home/home50.htm
Dogs in kennels or carriers or muzzled and on a short leash are allowed on Muni during off-peak hours (9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. weekdays, and all weekend). The fare is the same for your dog as it is for you, and your dog's ticket allows for one free transfer just as yours does. Only one animal per vehicle (or car, in the case of the Metro) is allowed.
AC Transit Contact: 510-891-4700 www.actransit.org
For no additional charge, you may bring a dog on board this East Bay bus system in a carrier that you can hold in your lap. If the dog bothers other passengers, though, the driver can ask you to get off the bus.
Caltrain Contact: 800-660-4287 www.caltrain.com
Only service dogs are allowed on this commuter rail line that runs between San Francisco and Gilroy and San Francisco, San Jose and Tamien.
Golden Gate Transit Contact: 415-455-2000 http://goldengatetransit.org
As long as he's in a kennel or bag you can bring your dog on this bus line servicing San Francisco and Marin and Sonoma counties. There is no charge.
SamTrans Contact: 800-660-4287 or 510-817-1717 www.samtrans.org
Dogs in kennels or carriers are allowed free of charge on this transit system that serves San Mateo County.
Santa Clara VTA Contact: 408-321-2300 www.vta.org
Dogs are allowed free of charge if they are in a carrier that can fit on your lap. According to the VTA website, the dog in transit shouldn't "endanger or annoy other customers."
Taxis and limousines Contact: 415-503-2180 www.ci.sf.ca.us/site/taxicommission_index.asp?id=8125
Taxi and limo drivers aren't obliged to transport your dog but many will. The smaller your hound, the better your chances. The key is to be polite: ask the driver if he wouldn't mind; reassure him that your dog is clean, well-mannered and quiet; carry along a towel or blanket to cover the seat; and tip well.

Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry Contact: 510-769-5172 www.harborbayferry.com

Golden Gate Ferry Contact: 415-455-2000 http://goldengateferry.org
Dogs are allowed aboard free of charge in "approved hand-carried containers."

Zipcar has modified its original draconian no-dogs-in-the-car policy. Dogs in carriers or kennels are allowed.
Airport shuttles Contact: www.flysfo.com
In general, airport shuttle services are fine with small dogs in carriers. Though officially they won't transport large dogs, if the driver is sympathetic and there aren't too many other passengers, he may agree if your dog is in a kennel. Show your appreciation with a generous tip.
Amtrak Contact: 800-872-7245 www.amtrak.com
The rule is simple: no dogs, ever (with the exception of service dogs, of course).
Greyhound Contact: 800-231-2222 www.greyhound.com
Don't let the name fool you—Greyhound forbids all dogs, except service dogs.
