You and your hound want to escape the city.
You're in luck. The Bay Area, surrounded by a wealth of natural beauty, offers more great hound getaways than you can shake a stick at.
You could take an outing every weekend for years and still not exhaust all the nearby dog-friendly getaways. That's why urbanhound has gone to work to help whittle down all the options. Carefully, and after much research, we've selected our eight favorite Hound Getaways. We've aimed to select a range of different kinds of trips north, south, and east of the city.
If indeed you would like to take a different outing every weekend for years to come, we suggest you consult two excellent books: Thom Gabrukiewicz's Best Hikes With Dogs Bay Area and Beyond (The Mountaineers Books, 2004) and Maria Goodavage's The Dog Lover's Companion to the Bay Area (Avalon Travel, 2005). Also: consider joining the San Francisco Bay Area branch of the Sierra Club, which regularly organizes hikes with dogs.
One final note: As San Franciscans contend with the uncertainty of off-leash privileges in areas overseen by the National Park Service and those managed by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, it's worth mentioning that the East Bay Regional Park District has just about the most enlightened off-leash policy in the area. In all of the parks throughout their huge system (we list one, Point Isabel, here, but there are many, many more), dogs may be off leash and under voice control in all open and undeveloped areas.
Happy traveling. - Mariann Lackey + Donna Horowitz + Laura Rosenfield
