The status of off-leash recreation in San Francisco is evolving. In the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA), managed by the National Park Service (NPS), which includes Baker Beach, Ocean Beach, Crissy Field, Fort Mason, and Fort Funston, off-leash recreation is longstanding tradition. In recent years, however, the legality of that tradition has been hotly debated both in and out of the courts. For now, as the NPS's "Negotiated Rulemaking Committee" concocts the future policy of off-leash play in the GGNRA, your dogs are still allowed off leash in some areas of these parks—as long as they are under strict voice control.
Meanwhile, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (RPD) provides 26 official dog play areas (or DPAs) in city parks, totaling 120 acres of off-leash space. The bulk of that acreage is in McLaren Park and on Bernal Hill, with the rest scattered throughout the city. Here we list both official DPAs and areas used for off-leash play (though not technically designated for it).
San Francisco has an active dog community that lobbies for off-leash areas (especially in neighborhood parks) and promotes responsible dog ownership. To get involved, contact the San Francisco Dog Owner's Group.
