American Airlines
On domestic flights, and flights to Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean, dogs that fit under the seat can be brought on board for $80 each way (23"l x 13"w x 9"h is the maximum size).

Dogs can travel as checked luggage (the maximum size kennel is 40"l x 27"w x 30"h and the dog and kennel together cannot weigh more than 100 pounds) in the US, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean for a fee of $100. For fares to other places, call the airline.

Generally, for your dog to travel as checked luggage the outside ground temperature must be between 45 and 85 degrees at all points on your route. But there are exceptions: (1) with a note from a vet, the airline will allow your dog to travel at temperatures as low as 20 degrees; (2) snub-nosed breeds such as pugs can't travel if it is over 75 degrees.

If it's too hot or too cold, or if your dog is too big to travel as checked luggage, you can still ship him as cargo for rates that range from $152 to more than $1,000, depending on your dog's size and destination. American has three levels of cargo travel: Priority Parcel, for dogs who, together with their kennel, weigh no more than 70 pounds; Expeditefs, for those who weigh between 70 and 100 pounds with their kennels; and Confirmedfs, for heavyweights.

Priority Parcel, available for travel in the continental US only, lets you check in your dog in the passenger terminal (rather than at the cargo terminal) as little as an hour before departure and does not require advance booking. Expeditefs and Confirmedfs require that you drop your dog at the cargo terminal at least two hours before departure, but they offer tracking that confirms when your dog is onboard and where he is at various transfer points too.
