Chiropractic medicine focuses on skeletal alignment, particularly that of the spine. The theory is that misaligned vertebrae can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, potentially blocking nerve impulses and causing pain. Chiropractors use their hands and special tools to help correct skeletal alignment. Veterinary chiropractic has caught on especially for horses, whose backs must withstand enormous stresses, but it is also used on dogs and other animals for back pain, lameness, neurologic problems, and rehabilitation following injuries.
The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association, founded in 1989, trains veterinary chiropractors. The association doesn't provide a directory of members on its website, but it does give that information over the phone (309-658-2920).
The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association's website lists members who practice chiropractic as well as other alternative-medicine therapies.
