The SF/SPCA is a private, nonprofit animal welfare organization that was founded in 1868. In addition to running a shelter, it has many other programs, including a dog and cat hospital that provides free care to pets of the homeless and low-income seniors, a hearing dog program, and dog training and behavior modification classes. The SF/SPCA's shelter, Maddie's Pet Adoption Center, houses dogs in sunny, comfortably furnished apartments, not cages.
The shelter has an average population of 500 animals. It adopts out over 3,000 dogs and cats each year.
The majority come from Animal Care and Control. The rest come from other shelters or the public.
For a puppy, $150 plus $100 that goes towards two SPCA training classes. For an adult dog, $80 plus $75 for a training class. The fee includes spaying or neutering, vaccinations, and de-worming. The training class fee is refundable with proof of enrollment in a training class elsewhere. San Francisco residents must also pay a $13 license fee.
The SF/SPCA has adoption counselors on staff who will talk with you and help you to figure out how to pick a dog who will be a good match. If you can bring along family members, roommates, and any dogs you already have, it will make it easier to select a dog that will fit well you're your home.
Bring proof that dogs are allowed in your home—a copy of your lease that says that pets are OK, a letter from your landlord, or proof that you own your home.
The SF/SPCA is supported exclusively by private donations. Some of these are raised by Critter Lovers at Work (CLAW), a group that organizes benefits and special events for the SF/SPCA.
