BART to Ashby Station.
Founded in 1927 as the Animal Rescue Haven, this shelter was first located in a converted pool hall at the corner of Ninth and Carleton Streets. Not until 1957 was the shelter renamed and moved to larger facilities. It became a "no-kill" shelter in the 1970s.
They adopt out about 250 dogs each year.
From municipal shelters or from owners who can no longer keep them. All animals have passed a behavioral assessment.
$125 fee includes spaying or neutering, vaccines, de-worming, microchip, heartworm test, $20 discount on obedience classes.
Most dogs at the shelter are pictured on the website, but you'll want to pay a visit to make sure you get to see all the dogs they have available. Once you find a dog that you would like to adopt, you'll fill out an application and be interviewed.
You'll need to be over 18 and provide a valid id and proof that you can have a pet in your home. You'll also have to bring all members of the family, including other dogs, to meet the potential adoptee.
Supported by donations.
