Bad Rap (Bay Area Doglovers Responsible About Pitbulls)
P.O. Box 320776, San Francisco, CA, 94132-0776. www.badrap.org/rescue
Bad Rap does not have a shelter. Adoptable dogs live in foster homes.
Founded in 1999, Bad Rap not only works to improve the reputation of pit bulls, but also to place loving, well-socialized pits into good homes.
They place about 45 pits each year.
Bad Rap temperament tests shelter dogs to find those who are affectionate, eager to please, healthy, and well-socialized. Each dog lives with a foster family for 30 to 60 days. While in the foster home they get basic obedience training and all necessary medical care including spaying or neutering. Only dogs who adjust well to family life are put up for adoption.
$100
Bad Rap's available dogs can be viewed on their website. If you see a dog that interests you, email the contact person listed in that dog's description. You'll be asked to fill out an application. (Hint: Bad Rap wants to know that you and your new pit will be great "ambassadors" for the breed. So you'll want to be able to demonstrate your knowledge about pits and about responsible dog ownership. The Bad Rap website has lots of information on both.) Once Bad Rap determines that you are qualified, they'll arrange to have you meet the dog.
You must be over 21, live in the San Francisco area, provide references, including from your current vet, if you have one, and prove that dogs are allowed in your home. You and everyone who lives with you will be interviewed, and a Bad Rap rep will do a home visit before and after the adoption.
A non-profit organization staffed by volunteers and supported by donations.
