Seven days a week, noon to 6 p.m., open until 7 p.m. on Wednesdays. Closed on city holidays.
BART to 16th St. Mission Station.
Since 1989, Animal Care and Control has been the city agency responsible for animal welfare. In addition to providing shelter, vet care, and adoption services for stray and homeless animals, the ACC enforces anti-cruelty and animal control laws. The agency also takes in lost dogs and provides dog licenses. The ACC has the lowest euthanasia rate of any municipal shelter in the country, 21% in 2003-2004. All animals are evaluated by a vet and behaviorist before they are put up for adoption.
The shelter population averages about 240. ACC adopts out over 4,000 animals a year.
They are strays, unwanted, or abandoned. This is the public city shelter, so no animal is ever turned away.
$105. Includes spaying or neutering, microchip, city license, rabies and other vaccinations, and a free vet exam. Senior citizens receive a discount on the adoption fee.
You can visit the shelter to find a dog, or view ACC's adoptable dogs on Pet Harbor. You can use that site to request that the shelter contact you if they get a dog who matches your breed, size, gender, and age requirements. Once you've selected a dog that you would like to adopt, you will be evaluated by an adoption counselor.
You must be over 18 and have a valid id and proof that dogs are allowed where you live.
San Francisco Animal Care and Control is partially funded by the city and county. It receives additional support from donations through The Friends of San Francisco Animal Care and Control.
